Title: Supa
Post by: micky c on June 30, 2015, 07:15:37 PM
Hi all,

I'd like to talk about Supa 1 by Cedric Haegeman.

I gave this map a go today and it's completely unlike any other map I've played. Quite amazing!

What does everyone else think of this map? Who is this Cedric guy anyway? Is he still in the community?

I'm so glad that people not familiar with the "Supa" phenomenon are discovering it. Supa was a significant moment in the history of Duke3D mapping.

Cedric used to come from time to time. I thought you may have heard of him before.. He was famous for his casanova reputation and large amount of posts on this forum.

A mysterious little boy. Very little of him is known. Some say he found the underwater ruins of Atlantis and lives there now. We'll never know.

I remember when Sang taught us all the true meaning of Christmas, and that we should all love and live in peace and harmony. We never saw him again after that, although the children say he lives on the moon now, keeping watch over us all.

Holy cow, the great Cedric is Sang?? This is amazing, what are the odds that a post about someone on a forum with half a dozen active members is actually related to one of those members!

I also see there's a Supa 3, and it's the highest rated one. Clearly what's happened is that the Oostrums were making a map and needed some help, then Sang came along and added details and awesomeness  -_-

Yeah, they made a shit map and I went "well, let's slap a tedious underwater maze in there" and the rest is history.

Heh sorry for the bump, but I saw the title and that prompted me to replay those legendary supa maps. :D

They're pretty much the mapping equivalent of "The room", especially supa 2 is so bad it's actually great.

I should play them someday. I barely remember taking a look to one of them when detailing was all that went through my head. Maybe i am now ready to endure its awesomeness!

That really makes me want to play it now!

I can almost picture the trailer for the map...

I have to admit though, supa 2 is funnier if you can understand the Dutch messages in the Belgian base. XD

I can translate them if you guys are curious enough.

Woah, it took a discussion about Supa for Alejandro to respond. :O

Anyway, I've thrown together a zip which includes the original as well as the translated version. Did my best to capture the.. *ahem*  spirit of the original. :D

Have fun!

Thanks for the translation. I just played it. It was a fucking experience I'll tell you that much. The only other thing I've seen remotely like it was that recent map by Zykov Eddy that intentionally incorporated all the terrible mapping tropes.

The description in the text file made no sense, and was apparently written by a Sang that was 10 years old (nearly 11!) lol. When I loaded it up I was like "Well ok it's not the best looking map but that's to be expected". Then it just got more and more nonsensical. That large slope was an odd choice for example. Got a few laughs out of some of the messages.

So how serious was this meant to be as a map in terms of design and detail? The list of mappers associated with this in the text file is quite impressive :P

Haha, calling it an experience is pretty accurate. :)

I don't know what went through 10 year old Sangs mind when he made this. Supa1 looks noobish as well but at least there was some effort put into it, there's a coherent theme and an attempt at a story.

This one is just completely bonkers, and that's why it's awesome. :D
The gag with the weapons storage room still makes me laugh.

I do remember the long list of beta testers heh. From what I remember, we tried to be encouraging and not too harsh. My 10 year old self probably wouldn't have done much better.

Amazing reviews for amazing maps:

Supa (http://www.scent-88.com/reviews/S/supa/supa.php)

Supa2: Mission Possible (http://www.scent-88.com/reviews/S/supa2/supa2.php)

Let these maps serve as a before-and-after lesson to what putting children on Ritalin will do.

It is good to see how newer community members are also enjoying the immortal legacy (y)

I was thinking it'd be neat to remake the concept of Supa on my current mapping skill level. Then again, excluding AMC TC stuff, I haven't mapped in almost 10 years. So the difference might not be so great :D
