It doesn't make a difference.  It's only an example.

Excuse the cheesiness and vagueness of some parts. I don't consider myself to be exactly par with Ben in terms of writing.

Here is the background story.

-----------------------------------

The EDF, after many years, had decided to start exploring the farther reaches of space in the early 22nd century. With the exploration came new discoveries of planets much like Earth that were easily in reach of our current 'empire.' We had managed to claim each of the planets in the solar system as our own, as no multicellular life was discovered to still be living on any of them.

One of the main priorities of the expansion is to collect specific materials. These materials are for the new technology started around the time of the expansion's beginnings. This new technology is organic technology- the breed that will someday replace most, if not all, conventional, inorganic technology. Scientists cannot just create this technology from materials found on Earth, however. They are built using a specific type of gas which has molecules that can easily be disassembled down to the subatomic level, at which point the parts can be reassembled in the manner they wish. Needless to say, it takes a lot of gas to start. The EDF decided to help out by forming its own scientific branch and letting some of the scientific elites work with them.

The EDF military branch explored and colonized planets that resembled Earth in their ability to support life while the science team was split up in good portions to be put in each colony evenly, assuming that colony had the specific gas present. Above each colony orbited a special station. This massive station was a both a strategic defense position and an alternate place to hold civilians/scientists. Since the Earth was slowly becoming overpopulated, this helped with that problem, especially for the animals whose habitats were being destroyed to make way for humans.

Each space colony and station has their own small government, but still has to comply with the major laws set by those on Earth. Each colony is like Earth in that it was also made useful in terms of agriculture. New forms of animals and plants were discovered and they are used the same way many Earth animals were, but with this there are new regulations so that these animals would not disappear from the colonies. No colony may populate more than 50% of the planet's surface mass. The space stations above the colonies slightly help with this so that people may visit a colony from the station via a quick beaming down and people can quickly be mass beamed in the case of emergency.

There was discovered one particular colony. This colony was nicknamed Spes. When the EDF first landed to begin surveying the planet for colonization, they discovered signs of previous sentient life. There were ruins of an ancient civilization not of human origin. Despite the fact that the ruins dated back farther than the Egyptian Empire, the technology present there was figured to be more advanced than that seen in 1700s Europe. The EDF took much longer to survey over this newfound world than they had any other planet because they didn't want to stumble upon a sentient life that could pose a threat. In the end, nothing was found.

Months later, supplies were shipped from Earth to start building. While building, more of the animals present on Spes seemed to flee from the area. This is something that happens normally at the sight of a strange life form, but the animals were moving away at such an alarming rate that the EDF became suspicious. They halted building for a two month period to survey the planet again. No signs that sentient life had been there recently. Spes was finally done being colonized. No problems had arisen in the colony.

About a month afterward, a station was built and shipped to Spes. This station- Orion- was a prototype in comparison to the rest, save one or two. Orion had a two port rings instead of the usual one, and the defense system was insalled on the perimeter of the outer porting ring, as well as the ring just out of the center. Orion also utilized some of the new biotechnology in some areas, mainly around the Omega Core.

For about a year the station and colony existed peacefully until a small unidentified vessel was seen lurching towards Orion. The EDF crew on Orion attempted to contact the vessel with no luck. The vessel was heading toward one of the ports on the outside ring. The defense pulse cannons were aimed at the vessel as a precautionary measure. An EDF platoon was also sent to the docking station holding the vessel to allow passage onto the ship if the life on the vessel was friendly and trusted enough to enter.

The troops arrived with the atmosphere still relatively calm. The door from the docking station to the actual space station was still sealed tightly shut. From the central room, the management crew sat watching the monitors. Each troop had a headset camera that the crew could see through via these monitors. The troops readied their weapons as they approached the door.

The captain demanded that the rest of the squad sit a safe distance away. He proceeded to open the door. Nothing was there. The door to the ship was also sealed tightly. He exited the docking station and closed the internal door that was open. He opened the external door to the ship and watched the monitor that peered into the docking station. The green, pale monitor showed three beings enter the small room.

As the light shined on the captain's gaping face, his crew circled around him in awe at what they beheld. Standing in this small area were three beings with simple 'jumpsuits' of sorts. They had small metallic masks that might cover their mouths with a brace that went around the back portion of their elongated, greenish-brown heads. On the top of their heads was a metal hatch. The men followed procedure. The troops stood lined up forming a path from the dorway into the station. The captain requested that the door be opened.

When the door open, the figures stood silently staring at the captain who walked to the end of the path and walked slowly in to greet the visitors. The beings were puzzled at the mutterings of the captain. The three huddled, making odd sounds from within their metallic masks- the sounds consisting of different clicks and whistles, and a few parts that sound like a human could make. They took their original positions. They were in a triangular form and the one standing as the apparent leader started making his way slowly down the line to the captain. In a somewhat high-pitched voice, it spoke.

"We are from our Mlathropian leader. We are here to discuss your kind's expansion. The planet you call Spes was once our homeworld, Shaantitus, and we still claim it as our own planet in our own empire. We wish to speak with your officials about this so that we may settle the issue of trespassing."

The group was shocked again. The captain asked, "How can you speak our language?"

"We've followed your existance the whole while you have been expanding," it said. "We want to ensure that there is no misbalance of power between us. We wish to negotiate."

The group went by the code and brought the trio to the center of the space ship, where the main crew resided. The platoon rode in their security gliders as the captain jumped in his small vehicle, built for four. The Mlathropian trio rode with the captain. On the way there, they paid careful note of their surroundings, often communicating amongst each other. When they rode past a small glimpse of the Orion's Omega Reactor- the large, biothermonuclear-based core powering the station- they seemed to be in awe. They communicated rather quickly this time, and they sounded excited. The captain asked what the fuss was over, and the leader of the trio replied simply, "We are amazed at your reactor core! We have seen nothing like it!" The captain grinned and informed them of what you have just read about it. They proceeded, with the rest of the platoon escorting them.

They were greeted with awe when they arrived at where they were to discuss. The trio were shown their seats around a large, circular desk. In the middle sat the apparent governor of Orion and Spes in his own circular desk. His look was profound. The captain entered, speaking, "These are Mlathropian representatives. They say that Spes was their former homeworld, Shaantitus, and they still hold claim to it. They say we are trespassing on their empire." The governor doesn't know what to think, but he tries his hardest to come up with something to say.

A civilian spark was seen when they started to have small crowds in each sector, speaking of the aliens. The questions that hung in the air were why the creatures came onto their ship and why they were being escorted to the center of the ship. Rumors spread and panic burst out in some subsectors of the ship. The panic would worsen soon coming conditions.

In the conference room, a science official addressed the trio. A curious man, the official asked about Mlathropian technology. A vague question indeed, he asked verbatim, "How far ahead of our technology are you?" The apparent leader of the trio spoke with his collegues in their own tongue. The officials all stared, puzzled, but still assuming the three were making rough estimates of such.

The head of the trio said, "We estimate that, going by your time scale, we are approximately twelve millennia ahead... with the exception of your starship's reactor core." Viewable through a large window about a third of the length of the perimeter wall of the room was the reactor core, glowing in it's reddish-green glory. While the Mlathropian was saying this, he pointed one of his four fingers through the window. "We sense that this core is made of organic technology. We have been looking for ways to create this but have not found the methods to do such." The science team was in utter shock that the aliens were so far ahead but so far behind.

The governor finally had something to ask. "So let me get this straight. You are diplomats from your empire to tell us we're tresspassing on yours?"

"That is correct"

"Well..." The governor had a smirk on his face. He was not the kind of man to bring bad news to. He had a tendency to lose his steam over some of the most ridiculous things, and, unfortunately for him, this happened to be one of those things. He spoke stubbornly and slightly agitated, "Well, I don't know what the EDF protocol says about this. I'll contact them if you bare some sort of proof that Spes is your planet."

"Shaantitus."

"Oh, right." The governor also hates being corrected. "Where's your politeness? I would hope for some sort of 'sir' system to come into place here."

The head of the trio slowly stood up, and when he was as far up as he could be, the other two followed suit. The head crinkled his eyebrows above his blank, cream-colored eyes; he was not impressed with the attitude displayed by this pathetic excuse of a life form. In a cynical manner, the negotiator responded, "We don't mean to offend you... sir."

A hypocrit in his finest moment, the governor spoke in a flaming voice, "I'll not have your attitude! Troops, escort these three back to their vehicle." As the troops moved slowly toward the trio, they revealed their arms.

The two smaller ones drew plasma pistols. The plasma pistol is a sidearm to be reckoned with. It discharges a moderately powerful laser blast with an infinite battery recharge at the cost of a slowed rate of fire. It was of human design and probably stolen in the raid seen in the middle 22nd century, which was attributed to being commenced by a band of rebels.

The leader drew a havoc rifle, which was the 22nd century's finest improvement over the technology seen in the Colt M16 seen in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It could quickly fire big, bulky bullets in rapid succession and, with a grenade attachment, could also hulk rocket-propelled grenades at a quicker speed than normal. It was likely also stolen in the raid.

Enraged, the head spoke. "This cannot happen, sir. Mlathropian protocol says we must settle this here and now without wait. If the protocol comes to be challenged, we must retaliate in the harshest manner." The trio formed a triangle. The leader was aiming toward the table so he would be less likely to be the one hit, and he could still reach to hit the troops coming to them from the two sides. The officials all scrambled for the exit. The Mlathropians felt they would be better off keeping their charge than hit the minimal threats.

The troops were armed with havoc rifles and ten-gauge shotguns, except for the captain, who had a plasma rifle. A plasma rifle is capable of much faster fire than the havoc rifle and the blasts are, when combined to a total, much more potent than those from the plasma pistol. The backfire is that the cell must be changed after fifty shots and the reload is quite slow. Also each plasma bolt is quite slow-moving when compared to the bullets in the havoc rifle.

The captain yelled out for his troops to close in and try not to fire first. Following this, he ran out. The head and the minor facing him both fired at him, but he tripped, barely dodging fire, which in essence started the furious battle. He hopped in a hovercraft and jetted away.

The Mlathropians started shooting at the troops, plasma bolts passing through one and hitting his comrade behind. The troops would hit them with their havoc rifles, but the bullets would either deflect from the Mlathropians' jumpsuits or crash into the wall behind. One brave soldier jumped out of the way and hid on the other side of the desk, so that he was in the middle of the circle. He jumped up and shot one of the minor Mlathropians in the head, killing him.

He aimed at the other minor one but his clip had run empty, at which point the body of the one he had killed fell over the desk. He jumped down, scared, then looked at the head of the one that was dead and now giving a blank stare at him as it hung over the edge. He sighed in relief, after which the hatch on the alien's head opened up, spilling acid on the troop's legs. His legs were burnt off in a matter of seconds as he let loose a bloodcurdling yelp. The Mlathropians continued slaughtering troops.

There were fifty troops and 32 fell at this first round. The only ones left were in one side, so the Mlathropians could have left if they wanted to without a challenge. They proceeded to do so, as the remaining were in awe at what happened to their comerades. As the Mlathropians were about to go out the door, the head of trio-now-duo looked at them with what would be an evil face had he not been wearing his mask. "Have a good day." At this point, he drew the havoc rifle up with one hand and fired the RPG attachment. It hit the troops head-on, blowing all of them into burning giblets, including the lame troop behind the now damaged desk.

At this point, the alarm system went off.

The governor sat in his 'panic room' of sorts, holding a video conversation with the leader of the EDF, Global General Arnold Barthson. "You've got to send troops here! There are these things! I don't know what they are, but--" The Orion Station's position over Spes had gone, relative to Earth, behind Spes. Radio silence was all that was capable at this point.

The video cut off. Barthson was taunted that someone would launch an attack on such a masssive force as EDF. He was more than happy to comply with the Orion-Spes governor's needs. Unsure of what to expect, he called for the best eight troops in the entire fleet. His first choice and leader of this pack was Izekial Draftsund.

Izekial had fought in the raid in the mid-22nd century and apprehended the assumed leader of this rebellious group. The victory was entirely accredited to his commands over his officers and to the mad dash he made into enemy territory. He was able to secure the major sectors and have platoons pulled in. He lost 3/4 of the group called in by an ambush, but he alone was what made the operation work. He claimed he had special mind sight that helped him succeed. The other seven had a similar but somewhat lower background. They practically lived in Draftsund's shadows.

The eight were sent to the Orion Station unsure of their goal and they were armed only with dual plasma pistols. Barthson demanded they be sent in separate vehicles so it would be harder for any attacker to take them all out with one swipe. Izekial was at home when he was called for duty. He rushed out as a single man with no kids or wife and was fired into space from Earth. The others were all on other colonies closer to the Orion Station. Each was deployed almost immediately to the station.

Needless to say, Izekial was the last to get there.

Nice (y) You're a good writer, it was an interesting story (The section leading up to the fight was the story's weak point - it was a good section but not as well written as the other parts)

Like I said, cheesy and vague in parts. Good you like the majority of it, though. :)

Orion is kind of at a standby point as of late. I can't do much of anything besides map until EDuke 2.1.1 is finally released in W32 form.

Well I understand since you have been working so hard on this project lately - We have seen lots of results including tons of screenshots & weapon/enemy models etc.

Don't blame me for people not wanting to help out. If you really give that much of a shit, why not contribute? Frankly, I'm trying, but progress isn't getting anywhere without someone else helping out. I'm only human and my only major skill is mapping. If you're not going to help with it, don't bitch about a lack of productivity. Don't think I've heard this stuff? Guess again.
