Powerups / Inventory
« on: July 16, 2005, 05:28:46 AM »
Playing Powerslave and looking at the items in my inventory made me wonder how you guys use the Powerups/Inventory you gather along the way in FPS games (Think of the Quad Damage in Q2) Most of the time I always save mine for some big encounter even if I don't know if there will be one. It's a waste in many cases but I alwayts treat every power up as if it's my last

Also another note - Do you prefer pickups you can hold onto and keep like Unreal and Quake 2, or ones that activate as soon as you reach them like in Quake and Doom?

Speaking of Steroids, I have never ever used one in Duke. Ofcourse I have tried it, but I have never had any use for them - just like the Holoduke.. Completely pointless. :D (Except both in Multiplayer)

Edit: Voted for the second option!

^Steroids come handy pretty often actually.

Anyways me voted for the second option - I use 'em when I need 'em. I also prefer to have the ability to decide when I want to use them.

Depends on wich game...
Heretic and Hexen for example. Both games had a shitload of items wich you would never use or need (excluding the Tome of Power for triggering the alternate fire for the weapons).

In Duke3D the Jetpack, Scuba Gear and Boots became handy and sometimes vital.

Well I don't really care wether they get triggered when you pick 'em up or if you can save them for later, since if it's the first case you get them when you need them so it doesn't matter :)

For some stuff like a Jetpack or some protection shield the option to save it for some time would be nice but it doesn't matter much to me if I get an invincibility thingey where you don't even need it and then it's expired by the end of the room :)
