Never doubt!

I'm very sorry for always leaving the community in the dark about this game. For some reason I don't enjoy talking about my project much. I find that I'm always saying the same things and I feel that people get sick of hearing about it. But then I feel bad that I don't post. I think "maybe I should drop by AMC" but then I feel guilty knowing that I don't have a release or some crazy development diary for you and I avoid the site. However, I realize that it's much worse to say nothing and I miss the forums too so here goes the latest update on HellShock:

It's going very well! People assume that it's always abandoned but nothing has ever been further from the truth. I've been working on the project at least twice per week for 9 years now. When I do work on it, it's at least for an hour, usually 2 or 3 hours. I also go out around the city photographing things to make new textures or get inspiration. This mod has been my main hobby for nearly a decade now I don't think it's going to change.

I'm mostly working on the final level (not including the boss-battle "arena") now. It's very epic and I assure you that nobody will have experienced anything like it before. It's almost beyond description. It's coming close to the sector limit now and I intend to implement the puzzles and gameplay soon. I also spent time updating the earlier maps. While they still don't meet my current standards I'm much happier with them now and they look acceptable. The screenshots on the website (I need to check if it even still works!) do not resemble what the game looks like now.

Something I've been neglecting (other than posting) is the CON files. There are bugs that are years old now and some enemy A.I. is still unfinished. I also plan on maybe cutting some enemies from the game. It's too bad, but I'd rather have a few good enemies than a bunch of crappy looking enemies that behave strangely and sometimes crash the game!

Weapons 6, 7, and maybe 10 need new art. Weapon 7 needs new code as well. Some monsters need better artwork. The final boss is not even started yet (art or code). Some sound effects need to be implemented or replaced. A couple levels have no items or enemies yet.

Overall though, the TC is progressing well and is in a very functional state. Most importantly though, it looks great and is fun to play (in my opinion).

I'll make sure to check this thread often for the next little while at least so please post away any comments, requests, questions, messages, flames, etc.

Thanks for the continued interest. I may not post often but I do hear comments (online and in the real world) and that motivates me a lot.

Well now you know what's up!

The last few days have been way too hot where I live. It's so humid that I'm afraid to use my computer at home for fear of over-heating! I don't have air-conditioning. It's also so sunny that there's always glare on my screen, no matter how I adjust it. The Sun even beams through the curtains. I haven't got much done this week but it's cooler today and if I wait until sun-down then I'll probably throw a record on the turntable and load mapster. I really hope I get to, I'm feeling inspired.

I've been working on this so long, I wonder how big the filesize has gotten? I'll have to check when I get home. It used to seem so crazy back in the day for a mnod to reach 100 megabytes but I've probably surpassed that. I think tiles001 to tiles014 don't have a single empty slot anymore.

CON scripting has made huge advances since you started your project.  I know you say it's going to blow everyone away but I find that hard to believe if you have been neglecting the code.

I didn't say the CON coding would blow anyone away. It's nothing special.

I did say that at least one level would blow people away however.

Hopefully people will have fun playing this game once it's done but if they don't then that's okay with me. After a decade of "hype" HellShock couldn't possibly live up to anyone's expectations anyway.

Hype is not an issue because you hardly ever talk about it.

Good! I just remembered that "back in the day" people were hyping it up (like any project that you look forward to) but obviously that hasn't been a problem for the last few years.

Yes, as you can see I only post sporadically. I've got the night off tonight and I specifically made NO PLANS so I could work on my project.

In addition to my day job (software design/multimedia company) I was offered a part-time job at a music store a few months ago. It's an easy job, quite interesting, and you get to meet cool people (unlike at my day job where I sit at my desk all day). I have fun there and I enjoy having the extra money but it cuts down on my free time (evenings and weekends). I'm single at the moment however so at least I don't have too many distractions! Plus the weather is colder now so it's nice to stay inside and fire up the ol' PC.

I occasionally get to game but there haven't been any good Duke maps out lately that don't need EDuke32 to run. I have had some success in the past running JFDuke but ED32 just refuses to boot. Oh well :/

I hope everybody has been enjoying themselves. I'm glad the scene is still strong.
