Release: Q1SP - Distractions
« on: September 23, 2007, 04:25:24 AM »
Okay, so my first Quake map - Distractions - is done. Download, play and comment!

In case you haven't played Quake in a while, I recommend you to use one of its Winports, just as you're expected to use EDuke32 or Jonof when playing Duke maps.
My recommendation would be FitzQuake: http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake/
Another worthy port is Darkplaces (however, it alters the visuals quite radically - Fitz is closer to the original): http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/

Just played it, and saw that it was good (y)

I kinda suck at Quake so I spent most of the map at low health and had to put on God mode when I had to fight those 2 shamblers at the end. Apart from that I didn't have any major problems at all. It was a fun map - it was well detailed (at least to my eye) although I agree with what you said in the .txt file when you said that there's not much z-axis stuff going on but that's naturally a result of using BUILD for many years. I think that part of the pack improved as I got to the end, and the final outside area was nice if a bit cramped.

Playing it through I recognised some of your style from your Duke maps (The 2nd screenshot in particular) I don't know why but parts of it reminded me of them. I don't think that's a bad thing however :)

I Found it a little too challenging but appart from my way of playing, i really like the general design of you map it was a good mix between outdoor and indoor with non linear progression an a good theme not boring...Hope you try to build hammer something in the future now you have learn the basic requirements

Thanks for the comments & the demo.

Underworldfan finally reviewed the map, giving it 13/20 and a very positive review:
http://underworld.planetquake.gamespy.com/quakerev080106.html#2ndreview

"This is a medium sized custom base level, using the classic custom IKBase textures to create a well designed and interconnected layout. This is a very good map for a first public release. All the texturing and architecture is well built and smoothly put together and there is some nice detailing in the consoles and textures, the layout is nicely interconnected with some solid chunky looking base structures and lifts. The darkly lit tunnels and small rooms were also well done."

"Gameplay is also good, especially on hard skill with 104 monsters. Monster placement much like architecture is again good for a first map with intelligently placed base enforcers and grunts shooting at you from logical and tricky positions on outposts and upper level positions. Every so often fiends or shamblers ambush in or surprise the player to spice up the gameplay. Health supplies and ammo are also very well balanced.
Gameplay flows along nicely with no annoying areas or obvious mistakes. The finale of spawning waves is also decently implemented, but more waves or a harder challenge would have been preferable here. In summary, this is a good first map, informed by the authors intelligent map design and understanding of map layout and gameplay, hopefully more ambitious maps will follow!"

The map got mostly positive comments at Func_Msgboard - the AMC of Quake Community: http://www.celephais.net/board/view_thread.php?id=60112

And, as you can read above, Stef gave the map a B.

So, with these in mind I declare "Distractions" as the best map ever made!

Some have complained about the map being too difficult and maybe so but my beta testers actually recommended me to make it even harder. I'm also pretty good at this game so no wonder the worst players felt that it was too difficult.
