Yes but does it remain fun for the entire game? I think one of the reasons people like Portal so much is because it's short and puzzle-based. In HL2 you'd use the Portal gun just to mess with the enemies rather than using them in an efficient manner to get past obstacles (like in Portal).

So really, if it's just going to be used in the way "well ppl liked it in portal soooo" then don't bother. It's fine for a mod, but in the actual game Valve would release.. no thanks, unless they made the HL gameplay more like Portal but I'd rather they didn't.

But what makes you think you can't have some puzzles for the portal gun in a "city" theme or something? Also they've been developing EP3 as well, so they probably have everything well planned, they didn't know Portal was going to have this sucess when they were developing EP3.

Also I trust them, they are insanely good at delivering fun and well thought out experiences.

Well sure but outside of those puzzles, what would be the point of the Portal gun besides messing with enemies or skipping parts of levels (making the episodes seem even shorter)? I firmly believe having the Portal gun is useless if the entire game isn't centered around it.

I don't think you'll be able to skip parts of the map at all, the portal gun can only create portals on certain surfaces, not everywhere, that's the gameplay mechanic in "Portal". On harder difficulties there are less "Portalleable" surfaces in the puzzle maps.

I know of that, but then the question is, how far can you limit the "portallable" surfaces so that the Portal gun is still of any use at all?

They could have it so that you can only use it one or twice a chapter, you could get the proto-type portal gun which needs to recharge itself to make the portals but i dunno.
Sang is right... adding the portal gun is stupid end of discussion

That's just pointless :/

Well like you said, if you can use it all the time then maps end up taking half the time they are meant to take.
Valve could think of a few interesting things to use it for though.

I'm not doubting Valve would manage to make a game in which the Portal gun makes sense, but it just wouldn't be HL anymore which is my point.

But the portal gun has always been there, we weren't aware of it, but it was there, my guess is that Gordon won't use it in EP3, but i'm sure you'll be able to use the girl from Portal in some part of the game, that would be neat.

I don't see any fun in that quote, maybe if I said "You'll be able to touch the girl somewhere in her private parts" but I didn' say that.

I meant as in taking control of her while Gordon is somewhere else or something.
