Well I played as barney, the two female doctors in HL: Decay, the soldier in HL: OF, and it's still HalfLife, and doesn't feel wrong.

Yeah but when you expect to play as Gorden it would be a shock to all of a sudden play as Alyx or Chell from Portal.
Unless you actual die in episode 3 then it wouldn't surprise me much.

Those are mods and spinoffs. The HL games made by Valve should be about Gordon and Gordon only (I mean their whole design idea was "you are Gordon" so why would they even consider changing to another character)

Because it's not written in stone that you should only play as Gordon?

It is, actually.

It's written right in this stone lying next to me.

No but seriously, HL = Gordon Freeman. The only point you could bring up is that because Gordon never speaks, his personality is irrelevant. However how people react to Gordon's presence means a great deal to me ;)

Oh wow - seems like they are putting some of the stuff they scrapped for HL2 to good use (IIRC the first level in HL2 was originally.. a ship called Borealis)

Just wanted to post that Sang was actually correct -

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6112889/p-6.html

Quote
In Laidlaw's first pass at the script, players would start the game by boarding the Borealis, an icebreaker bound for City 17. Once players arrived, they would discover the Combine, a new group of aliens trying to take over Earth, and Dr. Breen, an ominous Big Brother-like figure who appears on television monitors throughout the city.

Well, I was correct too (in a later version of the game) ;)

By the way, Sang's right, the only other character you could play as IMO is Shepard.

I loved the HL1 expansions. But playing HL2 with a different character is never going to happen. Even though Portal is in the HL universe it's its own game. My guess is the most we'll get to see of Portal at all in EP3 is maybe an old Portal gun that doesn't work anymore stuffed in a heap of wrecked parts. Or maybe the companion cube or one of the GlaDOS eyes or something. Maybe some "The cake is a lie..." graffiti lol. It would be stupid to mix Portal and HL2 simply for the hype around the whole portal gun idea. They are separate entities, despite being in the same universe. Easter eggs is all we'll get and all we'll need.

I hope we won't use the portal gun in EP3, and I'm fairly certain we won't. Who's to say that the dangerous new technology is the Portal gun or GlaDOS or something. It's something completely different and not centered around the portal gun or GlaDOS. As far as I'm concerned the only similarities that HL2 and Portal are ever going to share is the names Black Mesa and Aperture Laboratories.

Besides, they'd have to make the level design very restricted if they were to include the portalgun. Otherwise players will be able to reach areas they aren't supposed to be able to reach, and the game will get all screwed up.

New Half-life 2 episode 3 news!:

Quote
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 will see the first light of day at the E3 Expo this year. E3 '08 will be taking place between July 14 and 17 in Los Angeles, California, and will feature such other titles as Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty: World at War, Halo Wars, and loads of other highly anticipated games.

More information can be found right here. It's worth noting that only the PC and Xbox 360 editions are being featured, leaving the question on whether or not the PS3 will come into play with Episode 3 or not. We all know how Gabe feels about the Playstation...

Looking forward to seeing what they've done on it so far. Let's hope that this time around they DO meet their first expected release date (a man can dream)

That they might not make their release date and he's bummed by it, obviously. Luckily I haven't played anything HL2-related yet so no need for me to be sad :)
