Map of the week: Atmospheric Processing Facility
« on: January 23, 2008, 07:04:05 PM »
Map name: Atmospheric Processing Facility
Author:  Andrew Orman
Release date: 2000

Set on Venus, APF has you fighting in a facility designed to turn that planet's environment into something nicer. However aliens are taking over and plan to turn it into something they can thrive in, meaning that Venus would become a staging point for alien attacks on Earth. Naturally Duke can't let that happen.

This map ranks as one of my favourites for many reasons; it's of a decent size, it's got a wide host of effects (Subway system, drills, alien spaceships) and the gameplay's entertaining. The design is also nice and clean, and the atmosphere of the map manages to feel like a actual facility even if it doesn't really resemble Venus.

Give this classic a play :3

I vaguely remember this map, it's been such a long time since I played it. Gotta give it a go later :)

I very much agree with James here. Except from one thing; I hate this "automatic" rockets shooting at you constantly. This loud blasts follow you throughout the hole map. ( I think the code for those sounds are : 'GLOBALSOUND' or something).
Annoying sound.

I agree with you somewhat, although I think it also contributes to the atmosphere of the map somewhat (hearing those in the distance made the map feel larger for some reason)

No since it quite clearly says in the opening post that the map is made by 'Andrew Orman' and not 'Zaxtor'

Yeah, this one's very good, took me almost half an hour. It's one of those maps you could label under "adventure". I liked the Q2-style drill, the roof with all those fans and the central command with the moving computers.

The sound thing was quite annoying and there was quite a bit of backtracking.

He might have thought Andrew Orman was Zaxtor's real name.

I got to the big room at the end and then found out that I needed a red key card which I didn't have.  Went back through the level looking for it and couldn't find it.  I ended up spawning the key using the console.

There's a jetpack in that area. You can use it to go into one of the big power structures in the last outside area (There's a red area visible if you look up - you can jetpack up into that and the red keycard is in there)

Thanks, I had plenty of jetpack but I didn't think to look up.
