Another Timeless Night
« on: October 13, 2008, 11:03:16 PM »
Another Timeless Night, circa May 05, 2006, by Alejandro Glavic

Duke's riding the subway home when alien space craft start landing in the city. It's up to Duke to put a stop to the invasion.

A medium sized map that takes place in am el station and the surrounding city block. A simple layout with a good design. Although the shading is of average quality, there's some nice architectural and sprite work along with good texturing choices that create a great ambiance. There are a few areas, such as the lobby, that seem a bit empty, but that adds to the "everybody's fled for their lives, and now Duke's wandering an empty, abandoned city". The "invisible barriers" were annoying, but the areas beyond added depth and atmosphere.

A difficult play at times. At first, Duke's wandering around and nothing seems to be amiss, but don't get lulled into a sense of safety, the action picks up quick enough. The arsenal consists the pistol through the RPG and there's plenty of ammunition for all. There is a pipe bomb, but that's for blowing down a door, not combat. The aliens range from troopers, pig cops, enforcers, newbeasts, a few octabrains, and some commanders...several commanders and a few mini-battle lords. Then a few more mini-battle lords. And then a few more mini-battle lords. There's plenty of RPG ammo and a few good stashes of health, but damn! Fighting a stack of mini-battle lords and several commanders at the same time can be trying. The theme basically is to move from one end of the map to the finish while killing everything in your way. There's no real puzzles to solve and no keys to find. Definitely for those who like slug-fests.

Texturing/Lighting-Shading: 7/10
Sprite Work/Detailing-Architecture: 8/10
Ambiance: 18/20
Layout: 17/20
Gameplay/Difficulty: 34/40
Overall: 84/100

Would be nice if you include the download link when you start a ¨map of the week¨ thread.
I already played the map some months ago, it´s an excelent map but still i think that is the worse of Ale maps.

If you played it, then you should have it already :/. I don't remember where I downloaded it from.
I'm not of the habit of saying if it was the authors best or worst map. I just rate 'em, but I'll keep that in mind if I post a review of one of your maps. ^_^

I told you that because maybe someone feels interested on the map and has no way to download it.

I think it's a great map if you like that kind of gameplay -- big battles and no puzzles.  I know this is not the kind of gameplay you like.

I include this map as part of an episode for my DNWMD mod because the gameplay works very well for that.

I said that the map is the Ale´s worse but i just was pointing about the design, he used the same brown bricks tile in almost walls, and it´s a kinda of scuare map. Also i think that he used a cheap way to make the destroyed part, copying and pasting the whole map twice. I recall the gameplay hard but alright, but it lacks of those amazing scripted sequences that Alejandro always gave ot his maps, like charging fuel to the rocket in Military Madness.

I try not to compare maps against one another, even from the same author. I do my best to be impartial with every map I play.

As for the copy paste part of the map, you wouldn't notice it unless you were a mapper (which I'm not), clipped into the un-accessible copied part, or used dnshowmap.

As for the redundant brick texture; I think it adds an "old world" or "run down industrial" part of town aspect. Didn't bother me at all that there wasn't art-deco everywhere. But you're right, it's a basic-standard layout and designed map without a lot of fancy lights and whistles.

Looks real nice! Pretty sure I never played this one.

Btw Forge, you might want to look into that pixellation in your screenshots, using some of that anisothropidopic (yeah whatever!) in Eduke some. Might look more nice and smooth. :)

I still remember the first time I saw this map. I was like :o. Even if textures are somewhat repetitive (like Gambini already said) I found those details quite interesting -_-

I have that anisothropideoposturic...yeah, whatever exactly...at 16x. I thinks it just the graphics program i use to adjust the brightness contrast of the dark screen shots. Here's a couple that have been sharpened. I could probably get them better if I messed with the program some more.

Anyway my settings are:
resolution: 800x600
renderer: 33-bit opengl
texture filter: nearest
widescreen: no
anisotropic filtering: 16x
use vsync: no
ambient light level: slider moved 9 spaces to the right
enable hires textures: yes
hires texture quality: slider maxed to the right
precache hires textures: on
GL texture compression: on
cache textures on disk: on
compress disk cache: on
use detail texture: yes
use glow textures: yes
use models: yes
blend model animations: yes
model occlusion checking: no

If there's something that could be set better, let me know.

First put your renderer at 32-bit :P
resolution: 1240x1024 if your rig supports it
use vsync: yes again if your rig can handle it smoothy

Made adjustments. Don't know if it made a difference though. I can't get 1240x1024 screen resolution so I used 1280x1024.

um. yea. Next time I'll resize the screen shot to something more manageable.
