20 Sector Challenge (Community Build Project)
« on: November 19, 2010, 07:34:52 AM »
Hi everyone. About six months ago I started working on a level with a sort of cathedral-like feel but progress stalled because I had no idea how to continue it, and because I was also concentrating on another level. This morning I revisited it and realized I'm probably not going to finish it, but I like what I've done and wouldn't want it to go to waste.

I also got to thinking that what I've built weighs in at only 40 sectors. I've got light and shadow effects, arched windows and billowing hanging curtains- so you can do a LOT with just 20 or 30 sectors. And that gave me this idea. What if we had a community build project where everyone contributes 20 sectors at a time? I figure a lot of people might be interested in participating in a CBP but don't have the time, confidence or motivation to commit to building a big area. This might be less daunting.

The way I see it working is as follows:
*Reply to this thread that you're going to work on it.
*When you've finished your 20 sectors, increment the level file name (ie. if you downloaded 20sccbp-10.map, save it as 20sccbp-11.map) and attach it to your post so the next person can work on it.
*Please, no cheesy tricks like joining disconnected regions unless this forms part of a BUILD trick that won't work any other way. Things can go wrong, and you might confuse later mappers.
*I've also included a text file outlining lotags that have been used and what they do, to avoid people accidentally using the same tags and breaking each other's effects. :)
*Use as many sprites as you like, and if you want to create new art or sounds that will be awesome.
*If you don't feel up to creating new areas you can always add trimwork and detail to existing areas. For example, the east and south walls of my existing area are still bare and need to be made pretty.
*You can obviously participate as many times as you like, but try not to take two in a row, and give other people a chance to have a turn as well. (Yes, I know I've hogged the first two goes myself...)

Does this sound like a good idea? Does anyone have any suggestions/criticisms/shouts of "Nexus you're an idiot, this'll never work"?

The best thing that can happen is that the community creates a really cool level, one that's hopefully more coherent than other CBPs because it won't be made of bits developed individually and glued together. But if the project ends up fizzling out I will (eventually) finish the level myself and everyone who did contribute will be properly credited. Anyway, check out what I've got so far and if you feel like expanding it go right ahead.

Work so far (1560 sectors)-
Nexus - 261 sectors
CraigFatman -  300 sectors
James - 20 sectors
Eddy Zykov - 40 sectors
William Gee - 20 sectors
MSandt- 40 sectors
MikeNorvak- 439 sectors
MRCK - 100 sectors
micky c - 330 sectors

This is actually not such a bad idea. Maybe when we only have a few sectors to use, mappers will make less detailed but - perhaps - more memorable areas. Well, again, maybe... 20 sectors is still not a whole lot, even if the philosophy is "no focus on tiny details". If I ever feel like spending an hour on Duke the coming weeks I'll make something for this I think ;)

I've downloaded the map, gave it a try, so I think I'll add twenty sectors to it.
However sector limits may encourage mappers to excessive usage of spritework. We should be aware of that.
Also joining non-adjacent sectors is a way to get more detail using the same number of sectors (I'll avoid this as Nexus has noted it undesirable).

Well... the reason I'm not fond of joining non-adjacent sectors is that it's not obvious to later mappers that it's been done. And if they then work on those areas they can run into trouble. But I'm certainly not the king of this CBP so if everyone wants to allow it I'm perfectly fine with that.

Ok, I've boosted the sector amount to 60 by adding a section of a hallway.

Nice! That's some pretty imaginative use of textures, and I like the mirrored walls.

I'll definitely contribute once I get back home.

Finally.

It wasn't so hard to avoid that sector limit, I'd say.

Have fun with some new tricks.

You should include the text file with the tag list to keep us informed about effects you used.
And yes, nice fountain puzzle; also your area is really vast compared to mine. =)

Guess I'll take one more turn now to continue Eddy's location.
