Bethesda General
« on: September 10, 2011, 05:59:05 AM »
Anyone else into the Bethesda line of games? I played through Fallout 3 a couple of times and decided to check out Oblivion. The game looks dated in its vanilla un-modded condition, but with the right graphics mods, it looks pretty damn good:

Watch in 720p.

Its like World of Warcraft without the 14 year olds and angry 300 pound neckbeards ruining your immersion with their leetspeak.
HUGE game world and lots of dungeons and quests. Worth killing time with while waiting for Skyrim!

Bethesda? I've never heard of them.

More seriously, I enjoyed Fallout 3 and Morrowind but thought Oblivion was complete garbage (and yes, I gave it multiple chances, played several hours of it, but it just sucks IMO)

I'm looking forward to Skyrim though, even if I won't get it at launch.

I have an aversion toward games with elves, goblins, furries, wizards etc.

But Oblivion has always looked good. Even though I have zero interest in the game itself, I used to consider buying it simply for its graphics. Never did.

I agree about Furries, but elves, goblins, wizards, dragons and all the rest are ok.  What I don't like is when a fantasy franchise sticks too closely to the Tolkien mold.

Oh, yes. Oblivion is one of my favorite RPG of all time; spent over hundreds of hours with multiple characters. Can't wait for Skyrim. Never got into Fallout 3 though.

Bethesda have received their fair share of critique for the broken leveling system in Oblivion. It ruined a part of the game for me, but at the same time I feel the exploration
and other RPG elements make up for it.

I agree about the furry part. But you know, if they were to remove that race from the game, a horde of basement dwellers would choke on their cheetos and boycott the company because it is part of the "lore" from earlier games. God forbide progression and improvement  ^_^ I think that is what happened with Fallout New Vegas. Some fatass got mad because FO3 did not have casinos, geckos and other over the top stuff from Fallout 2 so then they proceeded to make a carbon copy of Fallout 2 in 3D - and there you have New Vegas.

A lot of stuff has been fixed in Skyrim though. They say the leveling system is more balanced. The footage from Quakecon is enough to keep me on the edge of my seat until November:

The vanilla game is broken. Unless you adulterate it with a dozen mods, there is zero motivation to do anything.
What killed it for me was the draw distance. You walk through a forest and shrubs are drawn five feet in front of you. Just feels wrong.
Though, there are mods to fix almost everything you hate about the game.

The concept is good, but there is just so many of these tiny mistakes that completely ruin the game. With graphics mods, and that leveling-fix mod, things actually turn out pretty well in my opinion.
