system drive repair, worth waiting or buy a new HD?
« on: August 09, 2013, 06:55:41 PM »
I just got a PC from my Dad that he wasn't using anymore, he said he was having trouble with the hard-drive but reinstalling windows fixed it. I had a problem with it yesterday when it crashed on desktop load and I had to restart, but it worked ok after that.

Today when I plugged in a wifi dongle (as connecting it via cable isn't possible, all the net sockets are downstairs and we can't have wires around the place) the PC crashed, and even when I restarted it it only got to the windows 7 loading screen and froze there. I took out the wifi, then it flashed a blue error screen for about half a second before going black. Turning it on did nothing, it froze again so I removed the other USB stuff and it started and went into the repair mode screen.

I've told it to try a startup repair and it says it can take over an hour, but it must of been going for about 2. I did some looking online and some people are saying it shouldn't take that long and others are saying it took several consecutive days. Electric is too expensive for me to leave this thing running that long, and it's very possible it'll just do it again anyways even if it did work.

Should I cut my losses, turn it off, and then look into replacing the harddrive, or just hold on for longer? Considering I got it for free I don't mind buying a new hard drive, but on the other hand I don't have large amounts of money so I don't want to have to get one if it's not neccesary.

I wouldn't rely on a potentially broken HD. It's possible that the problem lies with the connectors but you should be able to rule that out easily by trying out different connectors. My external HD started dying a few months ago and once I was sure it was not just an isolated incident I switched it off to prevent it from getting damaged even further and purchased a new 1TB internal HD. You definitely should not risk storing anything valuable on a potentially faulty HD.

There's nothing of value on the Hard-drive since I just literally got it on Wednesday; it's a shame since I played FEAR on it fine that day but yeah if he believed there was problems with the harddrive previously and he had only just reinstalled windows than it seems clear that that is what at fault. I'm just not sure if it's worth waiting for the startup restore or just calling my losses and shutting the thing down. I should get a new HD in anycase (as well as some more RAM as well actually) and luckily I still have this laptop which has all my stuff on it (which I'm backing up online as we speak)

Try the same HDD in a different PC if you can.

I managed to figure it out in anycase, I got an error message that googling revealed ment the harddrive was fucked and is on it's way out. They're really cheap nowadays so it's not a big deal, hopefully I can at least salvage the windows install from the other HD.

I got a posting error message yesterday myself so it's likely you did post but the forum didn't post it and you left before seeing the message.
