WIP of my first map: Streets Of Pain!
« on: December 19, 2015, 12:49:54 AM »
Hello AMC forums! I'm Rhaisher from duke4.net. James decided to adopt me in these forums so here I am! ^_^

Anyway, I'm starting this topic to show WIP pics of my first map to receive feedback, advice and opinions. Thanks in advance for all of those!

This is the current state of the level after 5~6 days of work. (y)

Nice, kinda like an improved 3DR style. There are some alignment problems though (like the wall behind the crates).

Welcome! it's quiet here but we all check it frequently so you'll get replies for sure. As I've said to you already, it's looking good (y)

Wow a new member on the forum, never thought I'd see the day.

Like others have said the map looks good, it's got good height variation, shadows, a sense of grandness due to the surrounding buildings. Is that your first map? (If so I'll be very impressed).

Good catch. I had fixed it already, but as I abuse the undo feature to erase my failed experiments it seems that I exceeded the things I wanted to undo. :/

Yes... it is. ^_^ Thanks to the various guides you linked me in the past and James help through PMs I've been able to build what you see in that screenshot. I have to say that I made three or four maps for UT a decade ago. But UnrealEd 2.0 has nothing to do with Build. To be honest, I find easier to build 'complex' structures with build.

Anyway... as I'll finish this section of the map on sunday, presumably, I'd like to know what's your opinion about this:

I wanted to simulate the UT texture that is used to simulate the rooftops you'd see from a high altitude - that's why the skybox city is blue insted of green as well.

These rooftops:

I know that you use that texture in the AMC TC. But I don't know how to give that a better visual in vanilla Duke. Should I change the texture and shade it so it's impossible to see from the playable space? :/

This is a quality concentrated forum, you get few replies but from people who belong to the elite of the elite, like me.. and the other guys too.

Anyway I like that rooftop screenshot, you could spend a bit more of time working on the shadows (specially for the crates next to the four fans) and adding texture detail to the floor. You know: borders, supports, anything that breaks the floor texture.

Ah I see. Yeah people with mapping experience in other games certainly seem to have a head start in Duke mapping compared to complete noobs. Sometimes people come out of nowhere with mind-blowing first maps.

James has already told me his opinion but I'd like to know yours as well. After a stand-by Christmas time this is what I've been working on.

Pre/post TROR blowable floor. I used to cover the hole with sprites until I found out that with an SE13 angle pointing down it was possible to generate a 'true' floor. -_-

The bathroom beneath the rooftop. That vent connects to another part of the level via SE7.

Inside the vent. I like how this shadow fan experiment turned out. -_-

The last 'room' of the vent section. A huge explosion blows a nest of eggs and a death babe - the pierced one (I chose this one so the player doesn't hesitate in shooting at the senines).

The explosion of the previous screenshot reveals a cellar.

It has had its toll on this corridor as well.

From here... one office of the porno studio - with a switch that reveals a safe room filled with ammo - and another vent that will put the player on street ground via another SE7.

What do you think about scale/illumination?

Hope you had a good year start!

Shaping up pretty well, it seems that you have understood how to lit maps.

That last shot in particular seems too tall. The ceiling should be about 2/3rd the height of what it is now.

Nah, I think it's fine - the corridor is already fairly narrow so the taller ceiling height works for it. Any lower and the player would barely have any room to move in at all.

Hmmmm... I'll look into it because the office has the same height. It will include a fight against some aliens too so I'm not sure whether to lower it a bit or not.

Guess once the office is finished I'll try gameplay and decide to lower all ceilings of that section or not. -_-

If there's a fight in the hallway, I'd  make it a tad wider to allow the player to doge the projectiles.
